Traversing the COVID gap: Antarctic PhD student support grants
Edit 20/8/2020: Applications are now closed. Thank you to those who made an application. Results will be advised.
The Antarctic Science Foundation’s purpose is to understand and protect the Antarctic region and our planet through Antarctic science. We raise funds and build research partnerships to support Antarctic, subantarctic and Southern Ocean science that advances global knowledge about climate and its impact, wildlife conservation and ocean health.
The COVID-19 pandemic is having a fundamental impact on the University sector and PhD students are particularly vulnerable to financial hardship. We are concerned by the high percentage of students whose potentially productive careers are at risk as they consider dropping out of their PhD study because of financial stress.
We recognise that our future research excellence in Antarctic science relies on the next generation of world class Antarctic researchers. The Antarctic Science Foundation is offering a limited number of grants of up to $5000 to future Antarctic research leaders to support them to complete their PhD.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants will need to demonstrate;
academic excellence and current enrolment in a PhD at an Australian university
the PhD is related to Antarctic, subantarctic or Southern Ocean science and aligned with the Antarctic Science Foundation purpose
financial need (including work lost due to COVID-19 impacts)
support from supervisor/head of school and a timeframe for PhD submission
willingness to share information about their research with our donors and subscribers and to support the ASF’s activities.
If you believe you are eligible and the support provided will enable you to continue your study please download and complete the application form and email it to info@asf.aq. Applications close at 5.00 pm AEST on Wednesday 19 August 2020.
Applications will be assessed by a subcommittee of the Antarctic Science Foundation Board and will be treated confidentially. Funds are limited and unfortunately not everyone who is eligible will receive a grant. The decision of the Board will be final.
