WINNERS

ANTARCTIC SCIENCE FOUNDATION’S

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK COMPETITION

The Antarctic Science Foundation wants to thank all students for their quiz entries and wonderful artwork. You all did great work as young Antarctic researchers! A big thank you to all the parents/guardians and teachers who helped students with the competition. It is wonderful to see all the curiosity and engagement with Antarctica.

Each entry received a number and the quiz winners were drawn with the help of the random app.

K-Year 2 Category

Congratulations to Sia Beresford, Year 1, St Thomas Aquinas Primary School, Springwood, NSW.

Sia began her project exploring sea slugs in the Antarctic sea. But she soon discovered other amazing things including starfish and eggs, which were too beautiful and interesting to leave out of her artwork.

Sia replicated pictures of the creatures from Antarctica with clay and glued a picture of Antarctica and the creatures onto cardboard, placing her clay creatures beside them. She then wrote down the creatures' scientific names.

Year 3 & 4 category:

Congratulations to Year 3 from Freshwater Bay Primary School, Claremont, WA.

Year 5 & 6 category:

Congratulations to Year 6 Lancefield Primary School, Lancefield, VIC.

Here are some more fabulous entries from the K-2 category…

Year 3 - 4

You can explore the ASF website and its section Protecting Antarctic Wildlife. Another good source is the Australian Antarctic Division Website to learn more about the iconic Antarctic species and then use your knowledge to complete the quiz.

Year 5 - 6

You can explore the ASF website and its section Protecting Antarctic Wildlife. Another good source is the Australian Antarctic Division Website to learn more about the iconic Antarctic species. Researchers in Years 5 and 6 can also do some research at Frontiers for Young Minds and then use your knowledge to complete the quiz .

National Science Week Competition

Calling all Young Antarctic Researchers (this is a past event)

This National Science Week the Antarctica Science Foundation (ASF) invites Young Antarctic Researchers to explore the animals of Antarctica and the science that helps to protect them. You or your team or even your entire school class can win an Antarctic Themed Pack for your class.

Antarctica is home to many iconic species. Penguins, seals and whales come easily to mind. But what about krill, sea slugs and seabirds? Antarctica is alive with sights and sounds of promising life. For all the wonder this continent presents, there are still many questions science needs to answer to protect those species in a changing world, like:

Is our consumption of krill in competition with its whales?

What can the seals tell us of changing oceanic conditions?

And how will the sea ice-dependent penguins adapt to retreating nesting grounds?

Competition:

Opens: Friday, 19 July 2024

Closes: Sunday, 18 August 2024

Winners will be announced on Monday, 26 August 2024 and winner packs will be shipped to your school.
