Remembering Professor Emma Johnston AO

On behalf of the Board of the Antarctic Science Foundation, we share our great sorrow at the sudden passing of Professor Emma Johnston AO, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne.

Emma was an inaugural Director of the Antarctic Science Foundation, serving as the Vice-Chair of its Board from 2018 to 2021, and as Chair during a period of transition between Chair and Board appointments. She was an active Director, helping establish the ASF’s focus on Antarctic science, the importance of nurturing early career researchers, and filling important funding gaps in Antarctic science research capability.

Emma will be remembered by very many people for her lifelong commitment to science,  and for her contributions to Australian education and the research community as a whole.

We here at the ASF give special thanks for her role in shaping our organisation, for her contribution to the functioning of the Board of the ASF, and for her leadership and friendship.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Emma’s family and friends.

Cheryl Walmsley, Chair, and Tony Press, Company Secretary.
