National Science Week Competition 2026

Calling all Young Antarctic Researchers - Seeds of Science

How can scientists discover what Earth was like thousands – or even hundreds of thousands – of years ago? The answer is hidden in Antarctica’s ice!

This National Science Week, the Antarctic Science Foundation (ASF) introduces students in Years 3–6 to the fascinating world of Antarctic climate science. Students will discover the difference between weather and climate, explore how scientists use ice cores as climate time capsules, and learn what tiny bubbles, volcanic ash, sea salt and other clues trapped in the ice can tell us about Earth’s past.

Our presentation also explores how scientists use ocean sediments, satellites and other technologies to understand climate change and help predict the future.

With clear explanations, Antarctic examples and an interactive multiple-choice quiz, students are encouraged to think like climate detectives and discover why Antarctica is so important to understanding our changing planet. You, your team, or even your entire school class can win an Antarctic-themed pack for your clas

Competition:

Opens: Monday, 17 August 2025

Closes: Friday, 28 August 2025

Winners will be announced on Monday, 31 August 2025, and winner packs will be shipped to your school.

Prizes:

There will be an Antarctic-themed prize pack for Kindy-Year 2, Year 3-4, and Year 5-6. All packs are valued at $100.

How to enter:

You can enter the competition if you are in Kindy to Year 6. Please ensure that a teacher, parent or guardian permits you to enter the quiz.

Kindy - Year 2

Young explorers in Kindy to Year 2 can join the competition with their Antarctic artwork or posters. Please send your picture to info@asf.aq. Your artwork can feature Antarctic Animals or posters with facts about Antarctica. This year, we explore Antarctica and ice-cores. Maybe you can design your own Antarctic station.

Year 3 - 6
