Dr Tony Press receives Australia Day honour

Congratulations to our colleague and Board member Dr Tony Press on being made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to the environment, particularly to the preservation of the Antarctic and Kakadu.

Tony is an Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) and the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership at the University of Tasmania.

He was formerly the Director of the Australian Antarctic Division (1998-2009), served as Australia’s Commissioner to the Commission for the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and authored the 20-Year Australian Antarctic Strategic Plan for the Australian Government in 2014.

Tony was CEO of the Antarctic Climate & Ecosystems CRC and was Chair of the Antarctic Treaty’s Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP) from 2002 to 2006.

Dr Press has made significant contributions to our understanding of Antarctic and Southern Ocean policy, science, and climate change through his dedicated service.

He is regularly called upon to comment on Antarctic science and geopolitics. Tony wrote an excellent essay for a recent Antarctic edition of Griffith Review (link below).

Less publicly but as importantly, Tony is a trusted mentor and promoter of scholars who will be the next generation of Antarctic researchers.

Chapeau, compliments, and felicitations to you, Tony, on this well-deserved honour.
