At our most recent Board meeting, Cheryl Walmsley was elected as a Director of the Antarctic Science Foundation by unanimous decision.

Foundation Chair Tony Haymet said, “Cheryl Walmsley’s appointment brings decades of experience and wisdom to the Board of the Antarctic Science Foundation. In addition, Cheryl has demonstrated capacities in strategy and execution gained across the corporate and charity sectors. We welcome Cheryl to the Board as we commence a phase of Board renewal which will enhance the impact of the Foundation.”

Cheryl Walmsley’s career has primarily been in the engineering and project management sector, working in change management, organisational development, human resource management and employment relations. For over 35 years, Cheryl has worked in multinationals, including Elders IXL, Levi Strauss, Cathay Pacific Airways, KBR, Downer EDI, and for Bechtel and Ove Arup on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link Project.

Cheryl has served on the Board of Lifeline Northern Beaches, was its Chair for two years and continues to be involved in the work of Lifeline. She attained a Masters in Organisational Psychology from the University of London (Birkbeck College) and is a member of the AICD and AHRI.

Cheryl said, “I am delighted to be joining the ASF. This role presents an opportunity to do something practical and positive for the environment. The Foundation strives to arm scientists with the necessary tools and support to obtain the knowledge we all need to understand our planet better. Understanding, protecting, and conserving our environment is essential to all of us, and Antarctica is unique. There has been a meaningful change in environmental awareness within our families and our communities, and I think there is a growing desire to act. For me, this is also an opportunity to demonstrate my respect for research scientists in general.”

Foundation CEO, Andrew Kelly, said, “Cheryl’s broad commercial experience and service in the NFP sector, combined with her innate curiosity and openness to new ideas, make her a valuable addition to our Foundation Board.
